The iPad Mini 2 and its Retina display is going to hit the market in the second half of 2013, with production of the display panels beginning in ‘June or July’ according to an analyst.
Richard Shim, an analyst for DisplaySearch, told CNET that the mass production of 7.9-inch Retina panels would begin in the summer for a launch in the second half of the year which could mean either late Q3 or some time in Q4.
Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook has previously said he expects the company to launch products in the Autumn, so this would line up with his statements.
Interestingly, Apple would appear to have a longer-term schedule planned out for the iPad Mini with Shim claiming there will be two models, one in late 2013 and one in early 2014.
‘We see two refreshes coming. One in the second half of this year, then one in Q1 of 2013,’ he said.
‘The Q1 [2014[ device will have a Retina display plus an updated processor.’
That would imply to us that the iPad Mini 2 arriving this year will have changed very little in terms of the internal hardware.
This doesn’t mean that only the display will be updated, of course, we could see an improved camera, the introduction of a revamped build of iOS with iOS 7 and perhaps some new value-added features in the vein of Siri.
iOS 7 features, services, apps and release date rumours
There is rumour that Apple is working on eWallet services implemented via a fingerprint scanner for the next iPhone – could this tech also appear on the iPad Mini 2? Apple’s also thought to be in talks with Beats Audio over a possible music streaming service.
The iPad Mini 2’s Retina panel will sport a 2048x1536 pixel resolution, according to Shim, putting the pixel density at 324 pixels-per-inch (ppi).
