Mozilla and Foxconn will announce a new Firefox device on June 3

Mozilla has joined forces with well-known Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn to bring a Firefox OS powered device to market, the pair have scheduled an announcement event for June 3.

We say ‘device’ specifically rather than smartphone because there’s some evidence to suggest the product may actually be a tablet instead of a handset, according to Focus Taiwan’s anonymous inside sources.

The move comes following a report from the Wall Street Journal suggesting Foxconn is ‘aggressively’ expanding its business strategy. It would appear that it’s no longer content with being known as ‘that company which makes stuff for Apple’ and wants to follow in HTC, Huawei and ZTE’s footsteps.

Mozilla is known to have previously entered into an agreement with Telefonica (parent company of O2) to bring Firefox devices to market. It’s possible then that we could see Foxconn made tablets and/or phones running Firefox OS launched via O2 for the UK market.

There’s currently no further detail on what kind of spec the Foxconn Firefox device might carry. But looking at previously launched developer handsets from Mozilla and taking into account what the company has said before, it may not have a particularly high-end set of hardware as Firefox OS’s requirements are kept deliberately low to allow greater market penetration and broader device compatability.

All will be revealed very shortly though as June 3 is only next Monday. We’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open for more details and will be sure to bring you all the news as it hits.
