Apple has now released a 2013 version of its dedicated WWDC app ahead of the company’s annual conference in June and the app has an interesting design style which may indicate where iOS 7 is heading.

It’s widely expected that WWDC 2013 will see the reveal of iOS 7, which reports indicate has been undergoing an extensive overhaul, overseen by none other than Jony Ive – the man behind the iPhone’s iconic exterior aesthetic.
Multiple reports have suggested Ive is aiming for a ‘flatter’, more minimalist aesthetic and with the WWDC 2013 app update, after numerous conceptual mock-ups, we might have just caught the first official glimpse of it.
The change, assuming it is representative, isn’t as dramatic as we’d expected. In a side-by-side comparison posted on PhoneArena you can see that the WWDC 2013 app has dropped the blue top bar in favour of a grey one which matches the rest of the UI elements.
It’s also less cluttered as the ‘Favourites’ tab has been moved down to the bottom bar. The bottom bar has also changed colour in-line with the rest of the UI, while individual notifications have been de-cluttered with a smaller quantity of more direct information and fewer bullet points. Favourite starts have been moved to a smaller, less obtrusive tag in the top right corner.
It still has a gradient effect to many of the UI elements though, something we weren’t expecting. Many rumours said Ive’s flatter design was closer in style to Windows Phone, ie: solid colour blocks.
Of course, an underpinning factor to the whole thing is that this may not represent iOS 7’s changes at all, but we can see the reasoning behind it and, to a certain extent, it’s quite convincing.
