Nokia EOS pictures leak showing massive PureView camera port

Nokia's EOS PureView smartphone has leaked online ahead of its July launch, with a rumored 41-megapixel camera

The much-rumoured Nokia EOS PureView has finally appeared in the flesh (or plastic) as pictures have leaked online.

The leaked images come via Chinese tech site WPDang and show a device very similar to what we’ve seen described in leaked details previously. It’s bright yellow and is shown side-by-side with a Nokia Lumia 920.

The Lumia 920 has an 8.7-megapixel PureView camera with optical image stabilisation and is quite bulky as a result. The EOS, however, uses the Nokia 808’s 41-megapixel setup meaning that by comparison the camera port is absolutely enormous.

The images also show a profile shot where we can see how far out the camera bump extends from the phone’s bodyshell – it looks to be a good 4-5mm out from the phone’s back panel.

It’ll be interesting to see how consumers take to this device. There’s no question that Nokia’s camera tech is extremely good, the best, even, as far as phones are concerned.

But, as the Lumia 920 and Nokia 808 proved, consumers don’t seem to be too keen on carrying colossal bricks around in their pockets anymore even if the camera capabilities are impressive.

Nokia remedied this on its Lumia 925 recently, which has a much thinner and lighter casing, but obviously taking such measures on a bulkier setup like the 41-megapixel sensor is a different ball game entirely.

It’s notable that in the leaked pictures, although the hole where the camera will go looks massive, the actual setup will be smaller than this. We can see in some of the pictures a black disc-like object with several differently shaped holes in it. This would appear to be a housing for the lens and rumoured Xenon and LED flashes which will then fit into the hole in the chassis.

Unlike the Lumia 925, Nokia appears to have opted not to use aluminium this time round and the EOS looks to be all polycarbonate.

The Nokia EOS is said to also feature optical image stabilisation and may even include a variable aperture. For non-camera specs it’s thought to have 32GB of onboard storage but no room for microSD capability.

The display is pegged as being OLED with a 1280x768 pixel resolution, so it should be the same as the Lumia 920 and Lumia 925 in this respect.

Rumours say the Nokia EOS will arrive on July 9 and presumably it will have some kind of number designation. We’ve previously seen talk of a Lumia 1000 but somehow we’re not so sure.
