Sony hints at smartwatch

News 17:00, 21 Jun 2013

Sony has dropped some substantial hints that it will reveal a smartwatch next week from June 26

Sony may be making another bid for the smartwatch space, following reports that rivals such as Apple, Samsung and Microsoft may all have their own projects underway.

The company took to Twitter posting a pair of images, including a statistic quoted from research firm BI Intelligence claiming that one in three smartphone users want a wris-wearable smart device. Again under the hashtags #itstime and #MAE13 Sony also showed a render of a Sony-branded watch device with the words ‘Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock’.

MAE is likely referring to the Mobile Asia Expo, taking place from June 26 to June 28 in Shanghai, China, so it’s likely Sony will showcase its take on wearable tech at the event.

While no further details have emerged, it’s noteworthy that these Tweets came from the Sony Xperia Twitter account (@sonyxperia), suggesting we may see the smartwatch loaded with Android and perhaps Sony’s UI overlay.

Previous Sony smartwatches have lacked broader functionality and have largely flopped, so hopefully with the news that rivals are making more competitive offerings Sony will have created something more fully-fledged this time round. The fact that its referencing smartphone users would certainly suggest as much.

We’ll be keeping an eye on things next week to see what comes out of MAE and will particularly be on the lookout for more news from Sony.
