Screenshots have leaked out via the XDA-Developers forum reportedly showing Android 4.2.2 running on the Xperia ZU and showcasing a tweaked Sony UI overlay.

The source claims these are very real and the forum has been a good source for reliable leaks in the past. The UI overlay looks very similar to the existing Sony UI seen on the Xperia Z smartphone, but it appears Sony is capitalising on the Xperia ZU’s expanded 6.44-inch screen real-estate.
The app dock at the bottom has been enlarged to include six slots for app shortcuts, three either side of the app drawer shortcut. The Xperia Z featured four shortcuts with two on either side.
Inside the app drawer the interface now employs a 6x5 app shortcut grid with smaller icons and it appears these smaller icons are also used on the main homescreen, suggesting the grid may have expanded to the same ratio here too.
The app drawer icon has been cleaned up, instead of the somewhat cluttered 4x4 dot grid seen on the Xperia Z we have a 3x3 setup, which is much tidier.
There’s little else to glean from the images at this point. What’s not entirely clear is the relationship the Xperia ZU may have with another, similarly specced premium model thought to be coming from Sony – the so-called Xperia Honami.
This device is said to be the first to embody Sony’s ‘One Sony’ brand ethos in its design, so it’s not clear if it will share the Xperia Z style look or something new.
Likewise it’s also been suggested it will feature a new ‘Xperia UI’ rather than the existing ‘Sony UI’. Whether the Xperia ZU also features the ‘Xperia UI’ or if it’s still on the ‘Sony UI’ is unknown.
Hopefully we won’t have too long to wait to find out. Sony has a couple of events coming up shortly, the most imminent taking place on June 25 and it’s thought we may see the Xperia ZU unveiled there.
We’ll bring you all the details as Sony reveals them.
