Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has been rooted on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition, before it's even hit the streets

The cheeky chaps over at XDA Developers may well have broken the record for fastest root time by working their magic on the 4.3 iteration of Jelly Bean before it’s even released!

The developer, who goes by the name of ‘Chainfire’, has adapted his SuperSU root, based on the leaked version of Android 4.3 which runs on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition, however it wasn’t all plain-sailing for the hacker, who admits that the root needed “quite a few mods to get SuperSU” to work on the Galaxy S4 GE.

The developer is also quoted as saying 'It remains to be seen if all of the protections that have been circumvented have been Samsung's doing (as is normal for Samsung pre-release leaked firmwares), or if some of them are actually normal for Android 4.3. For example, Android processes have their binding set of capabilities 0'd out. I've not personally seen that before on other firmwares, so I'm not sure if that's Samsung's doing or something 4.3. It prevents processes from performing certain actions – even if the process manages to execute code as root user - like mounting the system read/write. Just to be clear, this root does not suffer from this issue.'

It’s surprising that the issues could have been caused by Samsung’s additions to the software as the Google Edition of the Galaxy S4 is running a vanilla version of Android, with no third-party overlay, but it appears that even when you’re paying for an un-tinkered version of Android, it may not be as squeaky clean as it seems.

If you’re the owner of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition, then the root to Android 4.3 is fully operational, which means you can use it on your device if you wish. As with all roots, we’d advise proceeding with caution, especially as this one is based on software which is still yet to receive a general release.
