Carphone Warehouse is stripping its shelves of the black Nexus 4.
We reported yesterday that the white version of the Nexus 4 was no longer in stock on Google Play either - does this mean the Nexus 5 is on its way?
The keen-eyed folks over at Android Police have noticed that the page for the Nexus 4 is no longer present on the mobile vendor’s servers, which is similar to the Play Store notice in the respect that it’s not simply an ‘Out of Stock’ notification any longer, but something which seems a heck of a lot surer in its finality.
Carphone Warehouse was one of the first retailers to stock the Google device, outside of Google itself, and was plagued with the same stock issues that we saw in just about every place that the device was sold, and although the Nexus 4 is technically only an eight month old device, that’s fairly doddery in the fast-paced world of mobile technology.
However, far from feeling sorry for the Nexus 4 as it gets ushered off to the great mobile phone shop in the sky, the fact that Google is drawing a line under its current flagship device tells us that the Nexus 5 could be well and truly on its way, with most people expecting an announcement anytime between now and September.
It’s interesting that Google isn’t seeing the Nexus 5 (if that’s what it’s called) as an addition to a range, rather than a single device on which to put all of its efforts, but then Google has never managed its smartphone range in the same way as other companies, made all the more obvious by the affordable price tags it puts on its devices, despite their high-end specification.
We’ll be curious to see what sort of price the newest Nexus goes for, especially amidst whisperings that Motorola’s newest device, allegedly called the ‘X’ or ‘X1’, a mid-range, customisable handset, will also be available to buy through Google Play, but we doubt that the company which has forged its way in the smartphone world by keeping prices low will start selling handsets at an Apple-style premium.
