Mozilla has launched a low-end Firefox OS-based smartphone for €39 (£35) as the company begins its assault on a market dominated by Android.
The ZTE Open runs Mozilla's HTML-based Firefox mobile platform and features a spec line-up including a 3.5-inch display and a 1GHz single-core processor supported by 256GB of RAM.
Launched in Spain on O2 parent company Telefonica's network, the Open will actually retail at €69 (£60) with €30 (£25) of that included as prepay credit. You'll also receive a 4GB memory card as part of the deal.
Although the ZTE Open will launch exclusively on Telefonica in Spain, there are plans to roll out the release to other emerging markets including Brazil, Columbia, and Venezuela.
While the handset won't turn any heads in terms of its spec sheet, the release is key to Mozilla's attempts to increase the reach of its burgeoning mobile operating system.
The Firefox OS aims to lessen Google and Apple's grip on the smartphone space by introducing a set of development standards that make the OS more attractive to app creators.
This has already proved a popular proposition to app developers with the platform confirmed to support Twitter, Facebook, SoundCloud and Nokia's HERE Maps. More are set to follow.
As well as the developer community, the OS that first launched in 2012 has gained significant traction amongst OEMs. Alongside the support of carriers Deutsch Telekom and Telenor, device manufacturers Alcatel, Huawei and LG are also confirmed to be releasing Firefox-powered handsets in the near future.
