MoDaCo.SWITCH on the HTC One lets you swap between Sense and stock Android

MoDaCo.SWITCH will soon be available for HTC One handsets, letting you hop between Sense and stock Android

MoDaCo developer Paul O’Brien has announced he’s creating a ROM called MoDaCo SWITCH for the HTC One, which will allow you to run stock Android and the HTC Sense interface on the same handset and enable you to jump between them.

O’Brien posted his announcement on the modaco.com website, saying that it was coming ‘soon’. It is still in a bugtesting phase but he is planning on launching it as a public Beta in the not-too-distant future.

Also posted was a demonstration video showing the ROM in action on an HTC One. Both the Sense interface and stock Android appear to function quite well, although being still in an early stage there are a few hiccups but it’s expected these will be ironed out in time.

Notably, switching between the two interfaces is as simple as tapping a shortcut, however, there is also currently a noticeable length of loading time jumping from one to the other. Hopefully this will be reduced by the time its released.

Naturally, being a ROM this is something for more advanced Android users as you’ll have to unlock your HTC One and void its warranty in the process, but for some this level of tinkering and customisation which can be achieved makes it a worthwhile trade-off.

Responding to questions on his site, O’Brien says both interfaces will share the same data, so you won’t need to duplicate content to access it in either mode. He also says the phone doesn’t need a data wipe before flashing the ROM onboard.

While it’s not clear how much additional space is currently required for the ROM, O’Brien says he is aiming to get it below 500MB, meaning the impact on your usable storage should be negligible.

O’Brien has also dropped hints in the video that he would work on a similar setup for Samsung’s Galaxy S4 flagship, meaning you’ll be able to hop between TouchWiz and stock Android.
