ZTE officially unveils the ZTE Geek powered by Nvidia's Tegra 4 chip

ZTE has officially announced the ZTE Geek, a 5-inch handset with a full HD 1080p display and Nvidia’s powerful quad-core Tegra 4 chip.

That makes the Geek one of the few smartphone handsets officially announced with Nvidia’s latest processor onboard and here it’s clocked at 1.8GHz with 2GB of RAM. The battery is rated at 2,300mAh, there’s 16GB of onboard storage plus microSD and the handset features a 13-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture. It’s an Android device using version 4.2 Jelly Bean.

However, the phone is currently only available in China and its 3G connectivity is only enabled for that region. Hopefully the ZTE Geek, or a variant of it, will get a global release at some point and some kind of 4G capability wouldn’t go amiss either. At the very least the price point is looking healthy with ZTE offering the handset for the equivalent of $300 US, or about £187. Assuming that price transfers, we could be looking at a very competitive alternative to the Google Nexus 4, although Google’s rumoured Nexus 5 could very well end up troucing the ZTE Geek in turn, or even pre-emptively if ZTE dallies at launching globally.

In terms of visual design, the ZTE Geek appears to use a unibody construction and has white, black, blue and red colour options, though there may also be other colours we haven’t yet seen.

We’ll bring you more info as we hear it.
