Motorola’s CEO, Dennis Woodside, has left the company to join cloud system DropBox

According to The Wall Street Journal, CEO of Motorola Dennis Woodside has left the company to pursue a new role as chief operating officer at Dropbox. The report says Woodside will join Dropbox to provide oversight to grow the company’s business even further.

Dropbox is an online file hosting website which was set up in 2007. You can access your files on the move on computers, tablets and smartphones. It’s thought the company is planning to go public at some point in 2014. The company was valued at $10 billion by other investors in January 2014.

Woodside became the CEO of Motorola Mobility when it was taken over by Google in 2012. It’s thought he is leaving the company after the announcement that Lenovo is buying Motorola from Google for $2.9 billion.

Motorola’s press conference at Mobile World Congress was meant to be held by Woodside but he will no longer host the event. Motorola has confirmed the event will still go ahead.

Motorola was sold to Lenovo at the end of January. It came only two years after Google bought the company for $12.5 billion whilst Lenovo only bought it for $2.91 billion.

Google said in a statement, “Google will maintain ownership of the vast majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio, including current patent applications and invention disclosures.”

“As part of its ongoing relationship with Google, Lenovo will receive a license to this rich portfolio of patents and other intellectual property. Additionally Lenovo will receive over 2,000 patent assets, as well as the Motorola Mobility brand and trademark portfolio.”

There’s no official word from Google, Motorola or Dropbox on Woodside’s plans to leave but we’ll keep you posted when it becomes official.
