Sony launches three new phones at CES 2018

Sony's used the CES 2018 expo in Las Vegas as a platform to launch three new Xperia Android smartphones; the Xperia XA2, an Xperia XA2 Ultra, and the Xperia L2.

Sony Xperia XA 2 & Sony Xperia XA 2 Ultra

The Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra are both mid-range smartphones based around Qualcomm's 14nm Snapdragon 630 chipset, with the Xperia XA2 Ultra being similar all-round in spec to the regular edition, but with a larger body, display, and battery.

Designwise the duo are similar territory to what we've seen before from Sony, which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preferences, but there's a lot of metal and highly angular bodywork in this industrial, minimalist aesthetic.

The regular Xperia XA2 packs a 3,300mAh battery cell with Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 - a substantial uplift from the previous Xperia XA1's 2,300mAh setup. Likeiwse, the Xperia XA2 Ultra has jumped to 3,580mAh (up from 2,700mAh), again with QuickCharge 3.0.

The Xperia XA2 has a 5.2in 1080p Full HD display, while the Xperia XA2 Ultra has a 6in setup that is also 1080p.

You get 32GB of onboard storage and 3GB of RAM on the Xperia XA2, plus microSD support for expansion, however, the Xperia XA2 Ultra has options for either 32GB or 64GB storage both with 4GB of RAM. Both phones feature centre-top camera positions on the rear panel, below which is a fingerprint scanner, plus they both have Type-C USB. Primary cameras for both models are single-sensor setups rated at 23MP with an f/2.0 aperture, while on the front both have an 8MP ultra-wide fixed focus sensor for selfies and group shots.

Pricing is to be confirmed, but Sony will begin shipping both phones with Android Oreo baked-in from February 2018.

Sony Xperia L2

The Sony Xperia L2 is an entry-level handset with a 5.5in 720p display and a Mediatek MT6737T processor, meaning it is pretty much sporting the same basic hardware setup as its predecessor. However, the RAM has been boosted to 3GB and the onboard storage doubled-up to 32GB, plus there's a microSD slot for storage expansion too.

The main camera is a 13MP setup while the front-facing secondary is the same 8MP wide-angle sensor we see on the Xperia XA2 devices. Likewise it has a 3,300mAh battery and rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. However, there's no word on QuickCharge and the phone will only ship with Android 7.1.1 Nougat (an upgrade isn't mentioned). The Xperia L2 will arrive in late January.
